This treatment uses a ITF machine which emits a mid-frequency electrical signal to treat muscular spasms and strains. Pads are placed on the body and a current is gently increased around the area of pain. The machine can be set up to act more like a TENS-type device or a muscle stimulator by adjusting the stimulating (beat) frequency. The current stimulates the secretion of endorphins, the body's natural pain relievers, thus relaxing strained muscles and promoting soft-tissue healing. It also alters the 'pain gate' mechanism between the joint and brain thereby reducing discomfort.

At Optimum Clinic the ITF machine may be selected as part of your treatment plan for:

  • Muscle strains
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle stimulation
  • Pain relief
  • To increase local blood flow
  • To reduce oedema

Ultrasound treatment accelerates the healing time of some injuries and stimulates the production of more collagen which is the main protein component in tendons and ligaments.

Sound waves of a high frequency are produced in the metal treatment head of the ultrasound machine which is then moved over the surface of the skin in the region of the injury transmitting the energy into the tissues. This causes vibration and heating of the surrounding tissues. The rise in temperature during treatment causes structures such as ligaments, tendons, scar tissue and fibrous joint capsules to increase in extensibility.

Other benefits of Ultrasound treatment can include increases in tissue relaxation, local blood flow, and scar tissue breakdown. The increase of local blood flow can also help reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation. In addition, ultrasound treatments have been known to help reduce pain and muscle spasm and promote the healing process.

Optimum Clinic’s physiotherapists are all trained and experienced in this treatment. We have seen very successful results and may use this technique as a part of your treatment plan.
